While shaking
Protect yourself without running
Simple actions to reduce exposure to objects, glass, and facades during an aftershock.
Essential guide
An aftershock can arrive without warning. If shaking surprises you indoors, protect yourself from falling objects and move away from windows when it is safe; do not run for stairs or use elevators during the movement. [2]
When it stops, leave only if the route is safe and go to the agreed meeting point. Avoid facades, walls, poles, and wires. [2]
- Drop, cover, and hold on if firm protection is nearby.
- Do not push or go back for belongings.
